  • Advocating for Social Work Education and Values

I have been thinking about social work education’s role in the world we currently inhabit, and I am reminded of the words of Margaret Mead, who said: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world: indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” In these increasingly uncertain times, our commitment to the preparation of social work students and a workforce that is well-equipped to serve everyone necessitates action. The social work commitment to achieving positive outcomes for healthy individuals, families, and communities requires advocacy. This is where you come in.

  • Understanding Federal Threats Against Inclusive Education

It’s been another eventful week here in the Washington metropolitan area. We all saw several new policy changes in the media that we must now, once again, understand and monitor. The Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) continues to examine the impact of Executive Orders (EO) and other policy proposals on social work education and advocate for policies that protect and advance well-being, and we wanted to provide an update and context for the events of this week.

  • CSWE's Commitment to Stand Strong Amid Policy Shifts

It has been a busy first quarter of 2025. We have been privileged to spend time with our social work community at CSWE’s Spring Governance meeting as well as the annual BPD, NADD, and GADE events. We genuinely appreciate your kindness and hospitality and thank you for creating spaces for us to provide updates, information, and consultation to our shared communities. Our teams returned to the office with ideas, strategies, recommendations, areas for improvement, and gratitude for your support in navigating these uncharted waters. We heard what you said, and we are emboldened by our collective courage to not give in, give out, or give up, but to move forward with both hope and strategy because neither is a substitute for the other.

Research

The CSWE organizational mission includes the charge to advocate for social work education and research. CSWE's strategic plan outlines the need for research to inform policy and practice and to serve the needs of CSWE member programs—their deans, directors, faculty members, and students. The CSWE Commission on Research (COR) and CSWE research staff work to serve that need. The COR developed research priorities with input from the CSWE commissions and councils to guide their work; they will report on progress periodically.
