The State of Field Education is an initiative of the CSWE Council on Field Education (COFE). This is a planned series of surveys of directors or coordinators of field education.
The 2015 State of Field Education Survey report helps to answer critical questions about how field education programs are organized, who is leading them, and how they respond to student requests for alternative structures. A few highlights from the report:
- Of field directors or coordinators represented in the survey, 64% are contracted in their positions; 36% are tenure-track.
- Survey respondents reported a median of 1.5 full-time field education employees and a median of 117 MSW students being placed.
- Among respondents, 47.9% reported that teaching and research faculty members serve as field liaisons, assisting in monitoring students and communicating with placement agencies and supervisors.
Leadership for this seminal survey of field directors and coordinators came from William Fisher (Springfield College), Rebecca Brigham (University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill), JoAnn McFall (Michigan State University, retired), Lisa Durham (Ohio State University), Ellen Goodman (Boston Children's Hospital), Freda Herrington (University of Kansas, retired), Laura Lewis (University at Buffalo, State University of New York), Sharon Lyter (Kutztown University), Michele Sienkiewicz (University of Denver), and Lynda Sowbel (Hood College). Many thanks to the field directors and coordinators who took time to participate in the survey.
