Wayne State Tackles Health Inequalities in Detroit
As the COVID-19 pandemic unfolds, it has become apparent that health disparities continue to exist and negatively affect the infection rate of many Michiganders. Faculty members and students from Wayne State University's master of social work and master of public health joint degree program understand how environmental, economic, social, and personal factors influence health and well-being and are working to empower change in the Detroit community during this global crisis. CSWE Announces 2020 Awards Recipients
The Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) has announced the recipients of the 2020 Professional Recognition Awards. “The recipients of the Professional Recognition Awards represent the best of the best among social work educators, and we are honored to highlight their achievements and extraordinary work,” said Darla Spence Coffey, PhD, MSW, CSWE president and CEO. 2020 USPHS IPEC Award Winners & Finalists Announced
The U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS) and the Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) have announced the 2020 Public Health Excellence in Interprofessional Education Collaboration Award winners from University of the Sciences in Philadelphia and four honorable mention finalists. All honorees will be recognized at a ceremony in Washington, DC, in conjunction with the Summer 2020 IPEC Member Meeting on June 25‒26, 2020. This Is Who We Are
In the June 5 issue of Social Work Responds, “Two Pandemics,” we explored the role of the social worker during two pandemics that disproportionately affect communities of color, COVID-19 and institutional racism. Each crisis requires urgent attention and action, calling on social workers, regulators, and social work educators to be creative in responding to the needs of individuals and communities. This week’s issue continues to focus on how social workers are uniquely qualified to address both pandemics. Read more.
 

INSTITUTIONAL RESEARCH

Data Shows Students Ready to Return to Classrooms
CSWE today presented research that shows that 91.1% of social work students who had in-person classes move online during the spring 2020 semester would be interested in returning to the classroom this fall, if the option was offered by their university. The survey, conducted in partnership with faculty members from California State University, Sacramento, Division of Social Work, showed the impact to students when social work education moved online in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. It also asked about students’ intentions to enroll in fall 2020 courses under different scenarios and how students had been personally affected by the pandemic. See the full results here.

COA has released updated recommendations on field education that will be in effect through May 31, 2021. It is within the purview of each social work education program to determine whether the options will be implemented. View the recommendations.

Submit Your Pandemic-Related Manuscripts to JSWE
The Journal of Social Work Education invites submissions for a special issue titled "Teaching, Field Instruction, and Administration in the Time of Pandemic or Natural Disaster" to be published in spring 2021. Manuscripts are due via online submission by August 3, 2020. Find details in the call for submissions.

Access Books by or About People of African Descent
The African American Literature Book Club (AALBC) is the oldest and largest online bookstore dedicated to books written by, or about, people of African descent in the United States and around the world. AALBC celebrates Black culture, through books covering countless topics, for all readers to enjoy. Visit the AALBC online bookstore and browse its social work education titles.

Supporting LGBTQ Students During the Coronavirus Pandemic
The Human Rights Campaign Foundation in partnership with the School Social Work Association of America has released a new resource for school social workers that offers tips as COVID-19 continues to affect LGBTQ students across the country. The resource addresses the emerging issues specific to LGBTQ youths in virtual settings. In addition to addressing student safety and privacy, it covers supporting students without affirming families, promoting resiliency and equity, and connecting students to LGBTQ-affirming online resources.

Listen to Trauma Talks Podcast COVID-19 Episodes
Listen to the University at Buffalo’s School of Social Work’s Institute on Trauma and Trauma-Informed Care (ITTIC) Trauma Talks podcast, featuring four new episodes relating to COVID-19. They interview different providers to talk about how the pandemic has altered their life, as well as the way that they support others through what is an ongoing and possibly traumatic experience for many. 

Achieving Equal Opportunity and Justice in Juvenile Justice
The Grand Challenges for Social Work organization has published a new working paper, “Achieving Equal Opportunity and Justice in Juvenile Justice,” by Bo-Kyung Elizabeth Kim, Susan McCarter, and Patricia Logan-Greene. “To transform the juvenile justice system over the next decade, [the authors] propose five actionable goals for social work practice, policy, and research to dismantle inequity and injustice and foster the full social, civic, economic, and political integration of justice-involved youth.”
