UK Social Work, HR Collaborate to Expand Mental Health Resources for Diverse Employees
To improve mental health resources provided through Work+Life Connections, the University of Kentucky’s (UK’s) Human Resources collaborated with the College of Social Work to expand their services with therapists from diverse backgrounds to further support the mental health needs of Black and other diverse faculty members and staff. Work+Life Connections Counseling provides faculty, staff, retirees, and their family members with five free counseling sessions with a certified or licensed therapist via telehealth. In addition to individual therapy, the team provides employees with mental health screenings, assessments, and referrals to community-based resources. Read more here.

A Call to Action Against Anti-Asian Racism
The Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) condemns the alarming rise in discrimination, oppression, harassment, violence, and racism perpetuated against Asian, Pacific Islander, and Desi* American (APIDA) people in the wake of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. CSWE, the Asian Pacific Islander Social Work Educators Association, Filipinx Social Work Network, Group for the Advancement of Doctoral Education in Social Work, Korean American Social Work Educators Association, National Association of Deans and Directors of Schools of Social Work, Society for Social Work and Research, South Asian Social Work Educators Association, and The St. Louis Group unequivocally stand in solidarity with the APIDA communities across the United States and around the globe. An Update From CSWE's Anti-Racism Task Force
In the coming weeks, the CSWE Task Force to Advance Anti-Racism in Social Work Education will convene to provide feedback on an initial action plan for implementing recommendations focused on accreditation, data, training, and curricula. The Task Force members are currently working to organize and condense more than 150 distinct recommendations into clear guidance for social work education to become actively anti-racist. Read more

Report Highlights New MSWs’ Contributions to Behavioral Health
More than a third of new MSWs in direct care focus their practice on behavioral health, according to The Provision of Behavioral Health Services by Recent Master of Social Work (MSW) GraduatesThe report highlights findings pertaining to MSW graduates providing behavioral health services, including their primary job focus, demographics, educational and occupational background, job settings, licensing or educational requirements, mean and median income, and age of clientele served. Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) will hold its next Institute virtually on May 18, 20, 25, and 27, 2021. The May 2021 IPEC Institute, “Building Interprofessional Education for Collaborative Practice and Health Equity,” returns to the popular theme of building interprofessional education for collaborative practice (IPECP) to increase faculty and student preparation to deliver on health equity. Interprofessional faculty teams, individual educators, and practitioners looking for tools and strategies to lead, develop, and implement IPECP are encouraged to attend.

The Katherine A. Kendall Institute for International Social Work Education (Kendall Institute) has announced that the 2021 grant cycle is now open. The Kendall Institute awards grants for the development of projects to create international social work education materials and curricula that bring the global context into social work classrooms in the United States. AWARE: Asian Women’s Action for Resilience and Empowerment Lab
Boston University’s School of Social Work offers the Asian Women’s Action for Resilience and Empowerment (AWARE) lab. Funded by the National Institute of Mental Health, AWARE provides The AWARE study seeks to improve the mental and sexual health of Asian American young women in a manner that is sensitive to their unique cultural experiences and challenges.  It is comprised of group therapy sessions, as well as encouragement through daily secure text messages, called “AWARE Stories.” This intervention is integrative, holistic, and innovative.
 
NASW Abolition Town Hall Part 2: Creating the World We Wish to See
The National Association of Social Workers has scheduled a new racial equity town hall addressing the abolition movement in social work. Held virtually on April 9 (2:00 PM–3:15 PM), will explore what abolition looks like in practice, social work’s role with carceral systems, and what social workers can do to create a society in which the need for these systems is obsolete.
