Substance Use Task Force

12/4/2018

Dear Colleagues:

Representatives from your school or organization are invited to participate on a national task force being convened to develop competencies and curricular resources addressing substance use. We specifically invite social work education faculty members and practice experts, particularly who teach substance use content in their social work courses at the baccalaureate and master’s level. The Curricular Guide for Substance Use, part of the 2015 EPAS Curricular Guide Resource Series, will serve as a national resource for social work programs and will be disseminated to all CSWE accredited programs. This curricular guide is sponsored by CSWE and the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry State Targeted Response Technical Assistance Consortium, funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

We hope to have as many programs as possible participate on the task force to reflect the depth and breadth of the social work approach to teaching substance use content.

Task force members will be asked to participate in
1.    an orientation webinar (60–90 minutes) in January 2019;
2.    one of nine task force competency groups established to define the social work competencies for substance use;
3.    monthly calls in winter and spring 2019 to work on competency descriptions and curricular resources;
4.    a face-to-face meeting of task force members April 26–27 at CSWE in Alexandria, VA; and
5.    virtual meetings to finalize competencies and curricular resources through August 2019.
Participants will be responsible for their own travel, hotel, and meals for the face-to-face meeting. For those without travel funds, remote participation may be possible.

As a member of the task force, your program’s representative will share expertise with substance use disorder colleagues and garner new insights to enrich your program’s curriculum. Participants’ names and institutions will be listed in the published guide.

Please click here to apply for this national task force, or forward this information to any faculty members or practice experts in your program who may be interested. We will select only one faculty member and/or practice expert to represent each program or organization to ensure the broadest possible participation on the task force. The application period closes January 4, 2019; applicants will be notified in January regarding their selection for the task force.
