2018 Program Recipients

The CSWE 2018 Summer Leadership Scholarship Programs are an initiative of the CSWE Leadership Institute. CSWE is proud to recognize the five recipients of these 2018 scholarships.
Four attended the 2018 Harvard Institutes of Higher Education (HIHE), and one attended the 2018 Higher Education Resource Services (HERS) Bryn Mawr Summer Institute for Women in Higher Education Administration. They were honored at the 2018 CSWE Leadership Networking Reception held at the 2018 APM in Orlando, FL.

I am so thankful for the Council on Social Work Education Summer Leadership Scholarship to attend the Harvard Institutes for Higher Education-Management Development Program (HIHE-MDP). The world of social work higher education looks very different to me now and I see new and exciting possibilities. I expected to learn new skills, and I did. Content focused on budgeting and finance, personnel management, team effectiveness, and strategic planning. But it was more than skill building, it was a transformational experience. I made lasting relationships with 7 social work educators and with countless others from many disciplines from around the US and the world. Lisa Lahey challenged us to explore our personal strengths and challenges by uncovering our Immunities to Change. Dominic Rollins and Carlos Cortez strategized with us how to create campuses that are truly welcoming and safe for everyone. Finally, three University Presidents shared their leadership visons and described how to inspire and lead institutions within a moral and ethical framework. I cannot stress enough how intense and valuable this experience is for anyone in or considering social work higher education leadership. I will say it one more time, it was a transformational experience.

Thank you for the opportunity to participate in the Harvard Management Development Program (MDP) through the 2018 CSWE Summer Leadership Scholarship Program. I applied to the Harvard MDP as it was best suited to the opportunities and challenges in the middle management role I held at the time, as well as my career aspirations in higher education related to leadership in interprofessional practice and education (IPE). Specifically, I sought to a) strategically leverage opportunities within and across health professions disciplines and their related institutional hierarchies; b) improve my ability to navigate and negotiate pressure points within and between school, college, and administrative units; and c) position myself to take on new or expanded leadership roles within higher education. On all counts, the Harvard MDP program delivered!
Since completing the program, I have been appointed to the Ida Johnson Feaster Professorship in Interprofessional Practice and Education (IPE) with the University of Kansas School of Nursing and University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC). The Harvard MDP program prepared me to look at each situation I encounter through a set of lenses to help me evaluate and navigate the policy, politics, personalities, and perceptions I will inevitably encounter in my new role as I elevate, advance, and sustain IPE at KUMC. Additionally, I gained a new network of higher education leaders across institutional roles nationally and internationally to whom I can turn for advice, support, reflection, and inspiration. I was particularly gratified to participate with fellow social workers and members of CSWE. Our cohort is particularly interested in building a network of CSWE Leadership Scholarship Program participants who can work collaboratively to support and advance social work leadership in higher education.
Thank you again for the opportunity to participate in the 2018 CSWE Summer Leadership Scholarship Program.

Each summer since 1976, the HERS Bryn Mawr Summer Institute for Women in Higher Education Administration has provided a residential program with an intensive leadership and management curriculum for approximately 70 women faculty members and administrators on the Bryn Mawr College campus.
