Julia F. Hastings, MSW, PhD
Dr. Julia F. Hastings is an Associate Professor in the Schools of Public Health and Social Welfare at the University at Albany, State University of New York. She is interested in reducing health, economic, and service utilization burdens for racially diverse populations. Her research covers three thematic areas: Physical and mental health disparities (e.g., type II diabetes, depression, and oral health); welfare participation; and poverty. Three theories guide her conceptualization of problems and interpretations of data analysis. The Ecological Systems Theory, Cumulative Disadvantage Theory, and the Stress Process Paradigm. Hastings is currently principal investigator of COVID-19 and Telemental Health Services among Therapeutic Professionals and Consumers in New York as well as the COVID-19 and the Black Church Took Kit Study.
In 2015, she co-authored a book entitled, African Americans and Depression: Signs, Symptoms, Awareness, and Interventions. She enjoys serving on the Black Child Development Community Board. In 2019, she was named Public Health Social Worker of the Year by the PHSW Section of the American Public Health Association. Dr. Hastings earned an MSW from the University of Washington (1993) and in 2000, a Ph.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Her postdoctoral training (2000-2003) occurred at the University of Michigan in the Program for Research on Black Americans at the Institute for Social Research; the School of Public Policy; and the School of Social Work. She earned a certification in epidemiology (2005) from the Department of Epidemiology at University of Michigan’s School of Public Health. Dr. Hastings is a proud MFP Alumnus (1996-1998).
