Alexandria, VA – The Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) is pleased to announce the appointment of Michele D. Hanna, PhD, MSW, BSW, as the new Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Social Work Education (JSWE), beginning her term in January 2025. Dr. Hanna, an Associate Professor at the University of Denver’s Graduate School of Social Work, brings more than two decades of invaluable experience in social work education, research, and practice.
Dr. Hanna’s academic expertise includes Critical Race Theory, cultural and linguistic competency in behavioral health, and addressing racial disproportionality in child welfare. Her research focuses on critical issues such as foster care, adoption, and racial disparities, grounded in her former career as a child welfare professional. Dr. Hanna’s dedication to both academic scholarship and real-world practice aligns perfectly with JSWE’s mission to advance excellence in social work education and foster impactful change in the field.

As Dr. Hanna steps into this role, CSWE would like to express profound gratitude to Danielle E. Parrish, PhD, MSW, from the University of Texas at Austin, who has served as Editor-in-Chief for the past several years. Dr. Parrish’s commitment to the journal’s growth, including her willingness to extend her leadership by an additional 2 years, has left an indelible mark on JSWE. Her tireless dedication has expanded the journal’s reach and scholarly impact, and CSWE looks forward to her continued contributions in new capacities.
Dr. Hanna’s 3-year term as Editor-in-Chief will focus on advancing the journal’s commitment to publishing cutting-edge research, promoting inclusivity, and addressing the complex issues facing social work education today. CSWE looks forward to her leadership and the fresh perspective she will bring to the Journal of Social Work Education.
