Danielle E. Parrish, PhD, has been named editor-in-chief of the Journal of Social Work Education (JSWE). She takes over from Dr. Joanne Yaffe, whose term ended in December 2019. Parrish will serve a 3-year term, 2020–2022, during which time she also will head the JSWE Editorial Advisory Board and serve as an ex-officio member of the CSWE Council on Publications.
Dr. Parrish is an associate professor at Baylor University. Her research focuses on developing and testing feasible, efficient, health behavior change and mental health interventions; integrating research and practice into real settings through training/education on the evidence-based practice process, social service agency partnerships, and implementation science; using technology to increase the feasibility and reach of interventions; and reducing health and mental health disparities among vulnerable populations.
After graduating with a PhD in social work from the University of Texas at Austin, Dr. Parrish completed a postdoctoral research fellowship with the Health Behavior Research and Training Institute, also at the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Parrish’s passion for bridging the research–practice gap is informed by her prior clinical experience in California working in public mental health settings with children, adolescents, adults, and families, including juvenile justice mental health, infant mental health, and outpatient mental health.
Dr. Parrish has worked as a principal investigator or co-investigator on grants from the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Health Resources Services Association. She is a research scientist with Search Homeless Services in Houston, Texas, where she provides technical expertise and evaluation and collaborates on research to improve services for individuals and families who are housing insecure. She recently co-authored a book with Dr. Jennifer Bellamy that will be published in summer 2020 by Oxford Press titled, Strategies for Practical Implementation of Evidence-Supported Interventions in Social Work.
Dr. Parrish has taught across the curriculum at the BSW, MSW, and PhD levels. Currently, she teaches MSW students at Baylor’s Houston graduate campus and in the online social work PhD program. She has taught a variety of courses focused on direct practice, human behavior in the social environment, clinical applications of the DSM, research methods, data analysis, proposal writing, and the evaluation of social work practice and programs.
Prior to her appointment as editor-in-chief of the JSWE, Dr. Parrish served as associate editor and as a member of the JSWE Editorial Advisory Board, as well as on the editorial board of Research on Social Work Practice and as a consulting editor with NASW’s Social Work. She previously served as track chair/co-chair for the Evidence-Based Practice Track for the Council on Social Work (CSWE) Annual Program Meeting, as a member of the CSWE Council on Publications, and on the Society for Social Work and Research’s Committee on Publications. Dr. Parrish is a fellow of the Society for Social Work and Research.
