WHO:
Frank Raymond, Florida State University College of Social Work, and Society for Haitian Arts, Culture and Social Support
WHAT:
CSWE’s Commission on Global Social Work Education has selected the recipients for its 2010 Partners in Advancing Education (PIE) for International Social Work Awards. There are three awards categories: Individual, Degree-Granting Program, and Organization.
WHEN:
Recipients will be presented with their awards at the reception for CSWE’s Commission on Global Social Work Education on Friday, October 15 from 6:30 pm–8:30 pm.
WHERE:
The reception for CSWE’s Commission on Global Social Work Education, open to all 2010 Annual Program Meeting attendees, takes place at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland, OR.
WHY:
Individual awardee Frank Raymond, dean and professor emeritus at the University of South Carolina has spent a lifetime advancing international social work and social development through holding leadership positions within national and international organizations and pioneering the use of technology in distance education in South Korea. Raymond has also worked and conducted research in other fields that have informed the international social work field such as psychiatry, criminal justice, and administration.
Florida State University College of Social Work is the degree-granting program being recognized. This program has advanced international social work in the United States through it curricular offerings, which provide culture-specific research to its students and continuing education units for practitioners engaged in international social welfare services. Florida State University has social work programming in every major region of the world that emphasizes the understanding of social problems, cultural competence, and building partnerships.
The Society for Haitian Arts, Culture and Social Support (SHACS) is a US-based organization that provides social services and cultural programs to members of the Portland community and is active in the relief efforts of the 2010 Haitian earthquake. By building a facility to house orphans, this long-term project is just one way that SHACS is providing sustainable assistance to Haiti.
