International Task Force to Develop Military-Focused Curriculum Resources for Social Work Educators
ALEXANDRIA, VA— In collaboration with the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE), the Cohen Veterans Network (CVN), a private foundation dedicated to improving mental health care of veterans, is generously sponsoring the creation of a comprehensive military social work curricular guide for social work programs and educators.CVN President & CEO Anthony Hassan, Ed.D, LCSW led the development of CSWE’s 2010 Advanced Social Work Practice in Military Social Work guide. The new Specialized Practice Curricular Guide for Military Social Work will update the 2010 guide and support teaching of skills related to the nine competencies in the 2015 Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards.
“We’re ecstatic to once again partner with Dr. Hassan, and now CVN,” said CSWE President and CEO Darla Spence Coffey, MSW, PhD. “The specialized guide will aid social work educators in preparing social workers to address the specific needs of military service members and their families, and military social workers will be better equipped to give service members, veterans and their families the highest quality of care.”
“Cultivating social workers and other mental health professionals to serve veterans and military families is a top priority for our network,” said Hassan. “I’m very glad CSWE is advancing this invaluable Military Social Work practice guide with specialized competencies and curricular resources for social work programs and educators. It is crucial, especially today, that we educate social workers with targeted curriculum and experiences to care for our military and their families.”
CSWE will convene an international task force comprised of faculty members and practice experts from social work programs that have military social work concentrations, specializations, tracks, certificate programs, and/or courses in their curricula and organizations that serve service members, veterans and their families
The task force will begin its work tomorrow with over 60 faculty and practitioners, and the guide is expected to be published by the end of October 2017.
