ALEXANDRIA, VA—The Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) and the Cohen Veterans Network (CVN), a national not-for-profit philanthropic organization dedicated to improving the mental health care of veterans, have jointly published the Specialized Practice Curricular Guide for Military Social Work for social work programs and educators. This comprehensive curricular guide will help educators prepare social workers to address the specific needs of military service members and their families.
The new guide updates CSWE’s 2010 Advanced Military Social Work Practice Guidelines, led by CVN President and CEO Anthony Hassan, EdD, LCSW, and supports teaching of skills related to the nine competencies in the 2015 Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards.
“It is crucial that we cultivate the next generation of military competent social workers. The Cohen Veterans Network has a deep commitment to education and training as we work to improve the lives of this country’s veterans and military families,” said Hassan.
“Caring for our military and their families requires a community-based approach and expertise based on a set of specialized competencies,” said CSWE President and CEO Darla Spence Coffey, PhD, MSW. “We are grateful for the work of the taskforce and the generous support of the Cohen Veterans Network.”
“The specialized guide, created with interprofessional collaboration between social work practitioners and educators, will equip the social work community to meet the specific needs of veterans and their families to ensure the highest quality of care,” said CSWE VP of Education Jo Ann Regan, PhD, MSW.
To develop the guide, CSWE convened an international task force of 60 faculty members and expert practitioners who serve service members, veterans, and their families. Faculty task force members were from social work programs that have military social work concentrations, specializations, tracks, certificate programs, and/or courses in their curricula.
