November 16, 2011 – ALEXANDRIA, VA—CSWE and the Higher Education Resource Services (HERS) will join efforts to increase the number of social work women in higher education administration who will apply for the HERS Bryn Mawr Summer Institute.
This collaboration will begin with the June 17–July 1 HERS Bryn Mawr Summer Institute 2012 for up to five CSWE-recommended participants. In the 2011 academic year CSWE will fund up to one/third of the program expenses for those persons; HERS reserves the right to accept or refuse applicants into its programs. That funding will be made available through the 2012 CSWE Summer Leadership Scholarship Programs.
HERS is an educational nonprofit organization that provides leadership and management development for women in higher education administration. Founded in 1972 HERS has prepared over 4,300 women for positions of leadership at all levels including senior positions.
CSWE’s new relationship with HERS furthers its goal of preparing future leaders for high profile positions within social work education administration while providing visibility to the profession’s value and knowledge.
“Our new efforts with HERS will provide tremendous opportunities for social work women in higher education to experience an intense leadership and management curriculum designed to better understand and successfully address the challenges of the higher education environment,” said CSWE Executive Director Julia M. Watkins. “We are very pleased to be able to play a key role in supporting those future social work leadership development efforts.”
The CSWE Leadership Institute in Social Work Education strives to develop leadership among its members through educational programming, scholarship opportunities, and relationship building activities. This effort with HERS fulfills the scholarship portion of its mission. The other two portions are carried out at CSWE’s Annual Program Meeting through networking receptions and Leadership Development Institutes (LDIs). Part of the annual call for proposals process, LDIs are 3-hour sessions given by senior faculty or administrators with special expertise in enhancing social workers’ skills in various leadership capacities or in training future generations of social work leaders.
The Leadership Institute is guided by CSWE’s Commission on Professional Development, which is chaired by Alice A. Lieberman (University of Kansas). One volunteer CSWE membership entity within this commission is the Council on Leadership Development, which oversees the direction of the Leadership Institute and its scholarships. This council consists of its chair, Sam Copeland (Stephen F. Austin State University), and Joretha Nevada Bourjolly (University of Pennsylvania), Karen Bullock (North Carolina State University), Carla Curtis (Ohio State University), Michael R. Daley (University of South Alabama), Susan Bair Egan (Fordham University), Stephen H. Gorin (Plymouth State University), Santos H. Hernandez (University of Texas, Arlington), David A. Jenkins (Texas Christian University), Jacqueline B. Mondros (Hunter College, City University of New York), Scott D. Ryan (University of Texas, Arlington), and Allison Zippay (Rutgers University).
The Council on Social Work Education is a nonprofit national association representing more than 3,000 individual members as well as graduate and undergraduate programs of professional social work education. Founded in 1952 this partnership of educational and professional institutions, social welfare agencies, and private citizens is recognized by the Council on Higher Education Accreditation as the sole accrediting agency for social work education in the United States.
