November–December 2020

From the Director

As 2020 comes to a close, I sincerely hope that you and your families are healthy and well. As we have collectively coped with the pandemic and social crises throughout the year, I hope you will find the time to decompress from stressors large and small.

We commemorated Native American Heritage Month in November in an interview with Jessica Saniguq Ullrich (MFP doctoral ’19). As a member of the Nome Eskimo Community, Dr. Ullrich discusses the importance of history and connectedness, which are themes that we can all lean on! Be sure to check out her video in the full newsletter.

We were overjoyed to see so many alumni join our current fellows for a networking event during the virtual CSWE Annual Program Meeting (APM)! As we mentioned during the meeting, we will increase our use of CSWE Spark to foster connections between alumni and fellows in our dedicated, private community. Spark is free to join, and the steps to sign up and join the MFP community are in the full newsletter.

Finally, make sure to peruse the fellows and recent doctoral alumni who are featured in this year’s CV booklet. I am confident that each of them will make significant contributions in their postdoctoral careers.

APM 2020

Our doctoral and master’s fellows participated in this year’s virtual APM with training events incorporated into the conference program. The MFP’s marquee event this year was an interdisciplinary behavioral health panel to discuss the points raised in Ibram X. Kendi’s keynote. MFP doctoral and master’s fellows were joined by IMFP fellows from social work, psychology, marriage and family therapy, nursing, counseling, and addictions counseling for small group discussions sparked by our panelists Shinichi Daimyo, Jonathan Yellowhair, and Crystal Hayes (MFP doctoral ’20).

Even though we could not gather in person, thanks to the sponsorship support from the social work programs at Boston College, Case Western Reserve University, Fordham University, and Rutgers University, the MFP sent snack boxes to our doctoral and master’s fellows. Make sure to follow @cswemfp on Twitter, where you can see our #FeedtheFellows campaign to thank this year’s sponsors!

Where Are They Now: Alumni Career Updates

In fall 2020, Carmen Monico started working as an associate professor in the Joint MSW/PhD social work program of North Carolina Agricultural and Technological State University and the University of North Carolina Greensboro, teaching curriculum and elective courses in the Joint Master and PhD Social Work programs. She uses a global perspective in her teaching, research, and service. A primary research area for Carmen is global migration,  including (1) a study of the conditions in the various types of immigrant detention centers and shelters for unaccompanied minors; (2) an inquiry on Guatemalan migration to the United States, including conditions at predeparture, throughout the routes of migration, on arrival in the United States, and after return to country of origin or Mexico; and (3) health disparities disproportionally affecting Hispanics/Latinxs in North Carolina and how they cope during COVID.
