From the Director:

Greetings, MFP family.

Happy New Year! Can you believe that it is 2023? I remember a time when the year 2020 seemed more like an imaginative, futuristic improbability. And now we are here living in 2023. How amazing!

Plans have been made and objectives have been outlined for this year. The MFP team has collaborated with other CSWE divisions and affiliates to expand our current programs, expand our recruitment strategies, maintain our assessment routine, and offer additional support for current and future fellows. More specifically, we are excited about what is in store including but not limited to: the launch of our doctoral application in January and our MSW application in March; the fruition of our First Research, Policy, and Practice Summit scheduled for June; the evolving plans for our 50th Anniversary events; and our simultaneous ongoing regular programming. While we are excited about our plans for 2023, we also enter this year with an awareness and regard for the uncertain nature of time. If COVID has taught us nothing else, it has demanded that we learn to respect and respond to the uncertainty of time, and that we truly value that which we are given.

As we forge into the new year, we will carry the wisdom from this lesson and so many others learned in previous years, embrace the opportunities that could yield greater positive impact on the lives of others, plan to actively participate in the evolutionary process called “life,” and expect all the best that 2023 has to offer.  We hope the same for you and yours.

In service,
Dr. Kesslyn Brade Stennis

Alumni Spotlight

CSWE’s current MFP fellows are well on their way to distinguishing themselves in their professional and personal lives and are providing impactful services to their communities in several ways.

January’s Featured Fellow showcases Tashee L. Brown, a master’s in social work student at University of Alabama at Birmingham, preparing to graduate this spring.

Tashee L. Brown photoTashee has nearly 10 years of experience in the social work field. Prior to joining the MFP, she spent 7 years working for a local mental health nonprofit. Two years were dedicated to serving adults living with severe mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, bipolar, anxiety, depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, and more in the capacity of a case manager. Additionally, Brown has worked in youth crisis services for 5 years serving rural and inner-city communities. She shares that through these experiences, she learned the importance of community and supportive resources in working with individuals, groups, and communities contending with stigma. Her current approach in her role as a Program Coordinator for Youth Crisis Services prioritizes prevention education presentations within urban populations that have little access to mental health resources.

“My interest in working with the BIPOC population stems from my awareness of the disparities within my own communities as a Black female.” says Brown. When asked about her goals post-graduation, she noted the in addition to taking the social work licensure exam, she hopes to provide youth and family therapy for minority communities facing a mental health crisis. “I want to be a part of the change in Black communities that prioritize their mental health and make way for resources that understand trauma that is specific for the BIPOC populations.”

National Mentoring Month

Shianne Graves photoIn a statement issued on December 30, 2022, Joe Biden proclaimed January 2023 as National Mentoring Month, calling on “all Americans across the country to observe this month with mentoring, appropriate ceremonies, activities, and programs.”

The MFP has taken up this charge by choosing to officially launch the master’s mentorship program for the 2022–2023 cohort of fellows this month. The beginning of the program was marked by two “Speed Mentoring Sessions” during which fellows and volunteer mentors had the opportunity to engage in small groups to discuss mentorship styles and needs. Between now and the end of January, fellows will indicate which mentors they believe to be most aligned with their self-identified goals for the mentorship experience, and MFP staff members will assign students to mentors according to these preferences. Fellows will engage with their mentors throughout the spring, completing reflective journal entries to effectively prepare before sessions and capture key takeaways.

CSWE’s MFP is appreciative of the voluntary services offered by our esteemed mentors and look forward to offering fellows meaningful mentorship experiences in the weeks, months, and years ahead.

Not a current fellow or MFP Mentor? You can still celebrate National #MentoringMonth by taking a moment to thank the mentors in your life. Let them know what their support means to you and then inspire others to join the movement by sharing your experiences.

Society for Social Work Research 27th Annual Conference

Later this month, the Society for Social Work Research (SSWR) will hold its annual conference in Phoenix, AZ. Between January 11 and 15, SSWR will host four (4) plenary sessions, more than 300 sessions across 25 tracks of original symposia, roundtables, workshops, individual papers, 740 ePosters, and more than 75 special interest group meetings all built around the theme of “Social Work Science and Complex Problems: Battling Inequities + Building Solutions”.

MFP staff members are pleased to share a sampling of the presentations doctoral fellows will be giving this year at SSWR. Topics include:
